RICE COOKER

Overview

This project focused on designing a visually appealing and innovative rice cooker while reusing the existing middle part of an older model due to production cost limitations. The goal was to create a new design identity by updating the top and bottom parts of the product, particularly exploring opportunities to improve both the aesthetic value and the user interaction. The final design aimed to offer a modern, refined rice cooker that could stand out in a saturated market.
Design Challenge

The main challenge was to work within a limited design scope, as the middle body structure of the rice cooker had to remain unchanged due to tooling constraints. This restriction meant that the impact had to come from smart form development and subtle yet powerful visual and functional upgrades. During market analysis, I discovered that most rice cookers featured standardized, visible handles that contributed to a repetitive, dated look. I saw this as a key opportunity to create something unique and more integrated.
Role & Responsibilities

As the industrial designer on this project, I led the entire design process, including research, concept generation, CAD modeling, and design detailing. I was responsible for ensuring that the new design stayed within production limits while delivering a refreshed aesthetic and improved user interaction.
Result

The project resulted in a refined and cost-effective rice cooker design that succeeded in elevating both form and function without altering the core structural component. The integrated handle concept was well-received by internal teams for its fresh approach and feasibility, and the design clearly differentiated itself from competitors in the market. The final visuals and CAD package were delivered on time for production consideration.

Market Research

I began by analyzing competitor products to identify trends and gaps in design. The research revealed that most rice cookers featured exposed, bulky handles, contributing to a dated look and a similar user interaction across brands. This insight became the focal point of my concept exploration.

Design Direction

To create a fresh, modern product while staying within production limits, I decided to focus on redefining the top and bottom sections of the rice cooker. I targeted the lid and handle integration as areas with the most potential for visual and functional improvement.

Concept Exploration

Through sketching and mock-ups, I explored various ways to hide or soften the handle’s visual impact while maintaining usability. I developed a concept where the handle is fully integrated into the form of the lid, creating a seamless appearance and a surprising, ergonomic grip.

3D Development

I translated the concept into detailed 3D CAD models, carefully considering parting lines, ergonomics, and assembly methods. The final form offers a clean, minimalist silhouette with an intuitive hidden handle that enhances both form and function.
